Introduction
Vol.at.ilit.y dance performance explores water as connective element and its molecular shifts from vapor to liquid and ice. Using water in its different states, both as stage elements, source for musical composition and as a metaphor of human mental states and bonds towards each other, Vol.at.ilit.y combines art, science, technology and nature melting them into a poetic experience.
Vol.at.ilit.y will be shown in Barker -theatre, Virusmäentie 65, Turku, Finland in six performances.

Expedition
Part I
The expedition of creators of the Vol.at.ilit.y concept, Berlin based choreographer Tomi Paasonen and brasilian video artist, Tiago da Cruz, started in mid winter in Seili island, in Archipelago Sea near to Turku, where a mental institution for 'disturbed' women formerly stood and is now serving as Archipelago Research Institute for the University of Turku.
The research period in Seili is an opportunity to gather data, audiovisual material, as well as photos and conceptual ideas to further develop the dramaturgy of the dance piece. Being immersed in the icy reality of this Baltic archipelago, the choreography will rise from observation and the inspiration contained in nature itself and the bibliography that are both being shared through regular updates on this blog. For now it is basically snow, ice, water, both microscopically and what is available to the naked eye.

After the frozen reality of Baltic Sea in January, the artists had a chance to discover water under the microscope lense, in University of Turku. Thanks to Jorma Paranko and Nina Messner from Institute of Biomedicine for their time and dedication and Zeiss Finland for microscopes.
Part II
The second part of the expedition happened in the beginning of June. As an extreme contrast for the icy and snowy winter period in Seili island, June high temperatures and sunny weather showed Tomi Paasonen very different Baltic phenomena. He first took part to Aranda expedition "Finnmarinet" around Gulf of Finland. The aim of the expedition, organised by Finnish Environmental Office (SYKE) scientists was to explore the oxygen situation and habitat at bottom of Gulf of Finland. From Aranda Tomi continued to Helsinki University Tvärminne Zoological Centre in Hankoniemi and then, again to Turku University to continue his investigations of the water of Baltic Sea in microscopic level.
Audition
Audition for dancers took place in Barker-theatre, Turku in April. Rea-Liina Brunou, Linda Sointu and Kimmo Alakunnas were selected from 14 candidates to dance in Vol.at.ilit.y in October. The rehearsals will start in August in Kone Foundation Saari residence, that offers excellent facilities for the group. The location on the coastal area makes it possible to use seafront as a place to work the dance piece and the choreography.
